Why Being “Ready” is a Myth in Leadership
When I stood at the base of Denali for the first time, I felt entirely unprepared. It took three summit attempts to conquer the mountain. If I had waited until I felt “ready,” I might still be waiting today.
This is one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned—not just in mountaineering but in leadership. Readiness is often misunderstood. Aspiring executives think they need every skill perfected before stepping into a higher role, but that’s not true. Readiness isn’t about perfection—it’s about mindset.
Why the Myth of Readiness Holds You Back
1. You Miss Opportunities: Waiting for readiness delays action, and opportunities don’t always wait.
2. You Limit Growth: Leadership roles often teach you the very skills you think you lack. Taking the leap is how you grow.
3. You Risk Overthinking: Over-preparing can lead to analysis paralysis, while action drives clarity and progress.
How to Redefine Readiness
• Adopt a Growth Mindset: Believe you can grow into the role. No one is perfect on day one.
• Embrace Vulnerability: It’s okay to admit what you don’t know. Leaders who ask for help build trust.
• Focus on Action: Start by taking small steps toward leadership responsibilities—lead a cross-functional project, mentor a colleague, or present strategic ideas.
Resilience Completes the Equation
When I failed on Aconcagua or was seen as unlikely to succeed on Everest, it was resilience that kept me moving. Similarly, in leadership, resilience allows you to embrace imperfection and push forward even when the odds seem against you.
Leadership success is about stepping into opportunities and growing along the way. Coaching can help you redefine readiness, align your mindset, and develop the resilience to thrive.
