The Three Pillars of Executive Success: Lessons from the Summit
When I was preparing to climb Denali, I faced doubt—not just from others, but from myself. After two failed summit attempts, it was easy to believe the naysayers. But I didn’t let doubt define me. I returned for a third attempt, better prepared, more resilient, and with a sharper mindset. That time, I made it to the summit.
For aspiring executives, the journey is much the same. Success isn’t about avoiding failure—it’s about learning, adapting, and continuing to climb. Achieving executive success rests on three key pillars: Be Seen, Be Trusted, and Be Ready.
Be Seen: Elevate Your Visibility
In mountaineering, your team has to know you’re pulling your weight. In the workplace, visibility is equally important. If no one knows the value you bring, opportunities will pass you by.
How to Be Seen as a Leader:
1. Communicate Your Impact: Regularly update leadership on your team’s successes and how they align with strategic goals.
2. Speak with Authority: Share insights that drive discussions forward. Prepare talking points before meetings to ensure your voice is heard.
3. Build Strategic Relationships: Network intentionally with people who can advocate for your growth.
Mindset Insight: Confidence is key to being seen. It’s not about shouting louder—it’s about believing in your value and ensuring others see it too.
Be Trusted: Build Relationships with Authenticity
On my mountaineering teams, trust was everything. We depended on each other to survive. Similarly, in leadership, trust is the foundation of influence.
How to Build Trust:
1. Foster Authentic Relationships: Show genuine interest in your colleagues’ goals and challenges.
2. Communicate Consistently: Be clear and reliable in your communication—ambiguity erodes trust.
3. Admit Your Vulnerabilities: Authenticity strengthens trust. Leaders who admit they don’t have all the answers inspire collaboration.
Mindset Insight: Trust begins with authenticity. Be genuine, consistent, and empathetic.
Be Ready: Embrace Growth Through Action
I wasn’t “ready” for many of the mountains I climbed. But each step into uncertainty built my strength and skills. In leadership, waiting to feel ready often means waiting too long.
How to Be Ready, Even When You Feel Unprepared:
1. Take Action: Step into stretch roles that challenge your current capabilities.
2. Learn as You Go: Leadership isn’t about perfection—it’s about adaptability.
3. Stay Resilient: Use setbacks as opportunities to reflect, learn, and try again.
Mindset Insight: Readiness isn’t a checklist of skills—it’s a willingness to grow through experience.
The Foundation: Resilience and Mindset
Skills alone won’t get you to the top—mindset and resilience are the foundation for long-term success. Resilience keeps you moving forward when setbacks arise, and the right mindset helps you see challenges as opportunities for growth.
